Mystery of the Honey from a Lion Carcass by Travis Bryan III

“And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.” Judges 14:14

This is the riddle or mystery of the universe.  In a true story about Samson we find a foreshadowing of the revelation of the mystery through the Apostle Paul.  Rom 16:25; Eph 3.

The story of Samson shows that he killed a lion who attacked him.  The lion symbolizes Satan at Calvary.  Then, in the same carcass of the lion Samson later finds honey which he takes, eats and gives to others to partake of (Judges 14:8-9).

Out of the eater (Satan, the lion who devoured Jesus at Calvary) comes food.  Satan destroyed Jesus at Calvary, but Jesus rose up from the grave and Satan was the one actually left there defeated.  Satan, the lion, became the carcass.

The death and resurrection of Christ there became our food.  It is food we take out from Satan’s destruction, his carcass.  We drink of the broken body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Sweetness flows out of the bitter death of Calvary.  Life springs out of the  death of Christ.  A building of the church arises out of a demolition. Out of the destruction of the strong (Satan is the “strong man” of his his proud house–Matt 12:29) comes forth the sweetness of victory and blessing.

This is a paradox.  The death and bitterness brought against Jesus by Satan at the cross ends up being the nourishment and blessing of the world.  As we partake of the sweetness (honey)of His death we are likewise blessed.  As we suffer daily with Him we are raised, renewed and experience His comfort.

Paul revealed the mystery of the riddle of the paradox foreshadowed in Judges 14.  Life out of death; sweetness out of bitterness, honey out of vinegar (gall); and power out of powerlessness.  This is God’s secret program now revealed thru Paul.  As we die with Christ we are raised and empowered to live with and for Him!

Those who understood the riddle of Samson were given the spoils of victory, a new set of clothes.  Those who understand the mystery revealed by Paul know they have been baptized into Christ (into His death) and are thereby clothed with Him.  Gal 3:27.  They are enabled to put off the old man and put on the new man.  Eph 4:22-24.
