Many can be heard saying “I give to my church.” But is this something to be proud of? Is this what Jesus wants? Or, does the LORD want His children giving to build His true church which is His people, not physical buildings.
What did Jesus command His people to go do?
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations … Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:18-20
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature … ” Mark 16:15
Christ never told us to go and build physical church buildings. He and His apostles never built even one physical structure to advance His eternal kingdom which is “a spiritual house.” (1 Peter 2:5) Jesus told us to go teach and preach His Word so men could be saved into His eternal kingdom and be taught His truth. So, for this reason, true disciples of Christ should only support those work which are sincerely preaching and teaching God’s Word faithfully and diligently. Doesn’t a physical building absorb the whole time, monies, and energies of the people, yoking them down to it and completely stopping them from doing what Christ called them to do – go and teach and to preach His Word? Also, have you personally discovered exactly what the earliest Christians did with their money and possessions when they gave alms? Go read Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-35 and find out. Among the saints in the early church, no monies went to a physical building but rather to take care of “God’s building” which is His very people (1 Corinthians 3:9). Regrettably, nearly all local church organizations in this hour of the great falling away are nothing more than a business that exists to perpetuate their own existence and so only entertain and do not faithfully preach and teach the full-counsel of the Word of God.
